FAQs

Q. How long will the stencil last for?
A. It depends on the time of year it is done. If it were clipped into the coat in march and the horse sheds its winter coat in April, then only a few weeks, but if it is done in September/October, then  it could stay in for 6 months or more, but you will need to tidy the outline of your design as the rest of the coat grows. The stencils produce a difference in the length of coat. You can either touch up the design every few weeks or allow it to grow out for a few months during the winter and put in a new design.

Q. Do horses have to be clipped fully in order to have a stencil?
A. No. Using the system which Stencilbum has developed (patent pending), you have the choice of clipping either just around the design, or using your discretion and taking the perimeter off if doing a full clip.

Q. My horse is difficult to clip for long periods of time. Is there any way a stencil could still be used?
A. Because the stencils are self adhesive, they will stay in place on the horse even if the horse is moving about. Trimmers are for sale in our clipper section which are quiet in operation and these are a good introduction to being clipped for young or nervous Horses and Ponies.

Q. My horses coat is very long, will this make for a better effect ?.

A. Not from our experience of clipping them. If the hair is more than 20mm long when you come to clip the design, you will find that it will layer and this will make it more difficult to clip and do a neat job, A very hairy rump will also add a considerable amount of time to clipping the design due to the volume of hair to remove.

Q. I clipped my horse last month, when can I clip the design in?

A. When you clip your horses coat it becomes like velvet, sticky tape doesn't stick to velvet very well because it has a very small contact area due to the fabric fibres standing up, so you need the hair to have grown back long enough so it lies down giving the vinyl something to hold onto. The adhesive on the stencils cannot be too strong as it would remove the hair under the design when you peel it away.

Q. How can I best get the hair down to a workable length without clipping it all off and waiting for it to grow back?

A. The trimmers in our Clipper section come with a selection of length guards. You can use these to trim the target area to a workable length before you apply the template - make sure this area is clean and dry before you apply the stencil as the adhesive.

Q. Why can't I use the stencils more than once?

A. The stencils need to be sticky to stay in place if your horse decides to move around. More complicated designs can take more than an hour to clip so you may want to give your horse a break for a few minutes. You wouldn't expect to use sticky tape more than once, and when they vinyl gets dusty or hairy, it doesn't want to stick very well

Q. What makes StencilBum Stencils so special?

A. Because each stencil we sell has been designed and cut with the Stencilbum clipping system (patent pending). We use the finest materials to make the stencils which have been tested exhaustively to make their application  easier than ever before. This system has taken many years of trial and error to develop, and offers a reliable method of clipping fine designs on your animals coat - Beware of cheap imitations !

( VERY IMPORTANT:- MAKE SURE THE AREA IS CLEAN BEFORE YOU START ).

Also if it were just a sheet of plastic like a traditional back combing chequered stencil, you could lose the position of the design half way around and this will spoil a nice job. The other reason is because Clipper blades are expensive and fragile, and they could break easily if a harder stencil material was used.

Remember! - The template offers an accurate guide to work from, but the finished result is down to the level of care you take when working.
